As the old saying goes, from small things come big things. In the case of mixing engineer Phil Tan, the big thing is a three decades-plus career that has so far yielded 26 #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, 14 Grammy nominations, three Grammy wins, more than 300 million albums and singles sold in the United States alone, and over 100 billion streams worldwide (as of January 2024).

Over the course of his career, Phil mixed Number One singles by Beyoncé’s “Halo” with 1.5 billion streams, Katy Perry’s “Firework” nearing 1 billion streams, Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl” at 650 million streams, Rihanna’s “Only Girl (in the World),” (Grammy for Best Dance Recording) with nearly 1 billion streams, “Diamonds” with nearly 1.3 billion streams and “SOS” Leona Lewis’ “Bleeding Love” at 811 million streams, Snoop Dogg “Drop It Like It’s Hot” with 565 million streams, Usher’s “My Boo” at 687 million streams “Confessions Part II,” Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow,” Ludacris’ “Money Maker,” Kelis’ “Milkshake,” and Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together” and “Don’t Forget About Us” from The Emancipation of Mimi. He also worked on albums and singles by Outkast, TLC, Kris Kross, Toni Braxton, Xscape, Lil’ Kim, Mary J. Blige, Destiny’s Child, Coldplay, Janet Jackson, Madonna, Janelle Monáe, Alicia Keys, Alessia Cara, Ariana Grande, Ludacris, among many others.

Currently, Phil is working with South Korea’s NewJeans “OMG” with 607 plus million streams and their EP Get Up with over 1.1 billion streams combined, England’s Mae Stephens (whose 2023 single “If We Ever Broke Up” was a Top 15 U.K. hit), Canada’s Aqyila and Ari Hicks. In early March of 2024, Calum Scott’s “You Are The Reason”  is going to hit 1 billion Spotify streams.
